Earth Week at Lake Barkley – an annual event
Whether due to the spring rains and intermittent warm weather or the activities for Earth Week, Lake Barkley is growing greener everyday! From wildflower walks to live animal programs, bluebird box strolls (as seen with v
olunteer Bob Peak, below) to John Muir’s visits (aka Dick Shore and his living theater, at right), Earth Week offered nine days of nature-based activities and fun learning opportunities to the Trigg County community and guests of Barkley Lodge. Local foods buffets, owl prowls, and invasive species were some of the week’s popular programs, offering a glimpse of eco-stewardship and nature appreciation in preparation for Earth Day – and every day beyond!
The Volunteer Spirit at Lake Barkley
Cleaning up after a storm is a whole lot easier if you’ve got a community that cares! That was an easy discovery at Lake Barkley recently after Jenny and Nick launched an appeal for assistance on Barkley’s storm-damaged trails and flooded lakeside. Dozens of volunteers from far and wide offered their time and energy to give back to the Park they love! A great big thanks to all who helped in the last couple of months – we can’t do it without you! And we greatly appreciate you!!!
Lake Barkley is currently in need of volunteer support with trail and shoreline crew, native wildflower garden, and community education/interpretation projects. For more information on these projects, to offer ideas of how you can help, or to learn more about how your nonprofit group can earn free lodging certificates for fundraisers, contact Jenny at 1-800-325-1708.
Plan Ahead for Lake Barkley’s Fall Backpacking Trip
Spending a day in the woods and a night sleeping under the stars – it just doesn’t get much better! We’re delighted to begin offering this possibility to folks who may not have the experience or gear to do a backpacking trip on their own. On the weekends of October 18-19, 25-26, and November 8-9, Lake Barkley is offering one-night backpacking trips - complete with tent, backpack, sleeping pad and mat, cook stove, water filter, and additional gear – to anyone age 18 and older willing to share the experience. Registration is limited and includes a fee of $75 per person. For more information, contact Jenny at 1-800-325-1708.
