Naturalist & Recreation News

Program Update

Buckhorn offers a variety of activities, through the summer, most of which are children-friendly. Some of these include arts and crafts, nature walks, coal mining simulations, water games, and ball activities. We try to include the whole family in the evening with such activities as bat walks and owl prowls. Folk dancing, bingo and a campfire are usually scheduled on Saturdays.

Pontoon boat rides are offered at 4:30 P.M. Monday-Friday, weather permitting and boat availability. The public is welcome, but advance reservations are necessary. Feel free to call the park for times of activities and reservations for the boat ride. Occasionally, special entertainers will come into the park to perform as you see here with Elvis and Al Baumann, the potter.

Trail Information

There are two trails located on the park---Leatherwood Trail is a ¾ of mile circular trail, while Moonshine Holler Trail is a 1 ½ mile interpretative trail. Both are classified as moderately steep trails.  View Trail Information.

Other Recreation Information

For your enjoyment, there is a cabinet of games and toys located by front desk. On the park, we also have a tennis court, a sandpit volleyball court, horseshoe pits, a basketball goal, a shuffleboard court and a miniature golf course. Weather permitting, these are open for your enjoyment. Equipment for these sports are available at the front desk.
