State Park Levi Jackson Wilderness Road State Park consists of 800 acres with a museum and pioneer settlement.

Levi Jackson Wilderness Road State Park combines the beauty of a rolling, wooded hills park with a historic site that honors the pioneers who braved the perils of the wilderness to settle Kentucky.

Camping

A family enjoys a picnic at Levi Jackson State ParkNestled in open woodlands, campers can relax in a 146 site campground. For your camping, you will find utility hookups, a grocery store, a dump station, and three central service buildings containing an activities room, showers, rest rooms, and laundry facilities. Closed for season from November 18th to March 14th. Pets are allowed if restrained.

Group Camp

Levi Jackson is a great place for a fun-filled group camping trip. The group camping area has an activities building, and may be reserved up to one year in advance. Open year-round.

  • Minimum charge for up to 20 people.
  • Extra fee per person over 20 people.
  • A separate fee is charged for rental of clubhouse; varies with time of day and time of week.
  • Clubhouse rental must be included with the rental of group cabins.

Historic Buildings & Museum

During the night of October 3, 1786, the McNitt Party became the victims of a bloody Indian massacre in which at least 24 people were killed. This was the worst pioneer massacre in Kentucky’s history. A memorial to the McNitt Party was established at Levi Jackson Park.

Visitors viewing exhibits at the Mountain Life Museum.The Mountain Life Museum brings visitors into a pioneer settlement. Buildings in the settlement were moved from other sites or built as replicas on the park. All buildings are filled with pioneer relics including tools, products of agriculture and household implements. The museum consists of 7 buildings.

McHargue’s Mill, one of the historic buildings at Levi Jackson State ParkMcHargue’s Mill was built on the banks of the Little Laurel River where it intersects Boone’s Trace. This working reproduction mill dates to the same era as the original McHargue family mills and has authentic interior works, including millstones. It is surrounded by the largest display of millstones in the country.

Open Memorial Day through Labor Day. Admission is free.

Things To Do

Cool off on a hot summer day in the community swimming pool. A new pool containing water slides is open.

  • Pool closed after August 10th for the rest of 2008.
  • Lifeguard-protected.
  • Hours are 12 noon to 7:30 PM.
  • $5 adult under 62 and child 13 and over,
  • $4 adult 62 and older and child 3-12,
  • Free for child 2 and under.

August Pool Availability:
Please call ahead to confirm community pool hours which are determined by seasonal help availability, and many of whom are returning back to school during mid-August.

Test your putting skills on the 18-hole, miniature golf course near the campground entrance. Open April 1-October 31. $

Between 1774 and 1796, more than 200,000 pioneers traveled over the Wilderness Road and Boone’s Trace during the settlement of Kentucky. Today, visitors to the park can retrace the footsteps of the early pioneers on eight-and-one-half miles of hiking trails that include original portions of these historic throughways.

Horseshoe pits, volleyball, and basketball courts are available. Sports equipment may be checked-out to campers.

In the camping area, daily summer activities are available for children and adults under the guidance of a trained recreation staff.

Picnic tables, grills, and playgrounds are located throughout the park for a perfect picnic outing. Four picnic shelters are available for rental up to one year in advance.

Amphitheater

The Russell Dyche Amphitheater seats 1,500 people and is host to many community events, including the week-long Laurel County Homecoming in August.

If camping admists the ghosts and goblins is a hallowing time for you or enjoying the beautiful fall decoration is a treat then join us for "Camp Spook" Weekend. The campers will enjoy a chili supper and entertainment on Friday night. Other activities are planned such as hayride, fall crafts and Halloween entertainment. Be sure to participate in the best decorated campsite, costume contests and trick or treating. Join the bash, if you dare. The event is for campers only.
