Buffalo Herd

Bison roaming at Big Bone Lick State ParkThe American buffalo, or bison, is the largest of all North American land mammals. Great buffalo herds once roamed this area and provided food, clothing and shelter for the Indians and pioneers. Hunted to near extinction, the last wild buffalo was seen in Kentucky around 1800. The park's herd is an effort to reestablish these animals at Big Bone Lick.

Save an Endangered Species Day
7/5/2009

Big Bone Lick State Park is one of the few places in the world where the federally endangered plant, Running Buffalo Clover, can be found. Unfortunately, the loss of wild roaming bison, increase of invasive species and agricultural practices have pushed this plant to the verge of extinction. We invite anyone who is interested in helping to save an endangered species to join the naturalist staff at Big Bone for a short presentation followed by on site habitat restoration for the Running Buffalo Clover.
