Bow Building Workshop
5/3/2008 to 5/4/2008

Participants will have hands-on instruction by Gordon Holmes, primitive lifeways specialist, and craft their own Eastern Woodlands style long bow made of hickory and be provided with tips on arrow-making. All materials will be furnished. Lunch arrangements are on your own, picnic area available. Class size is limited, so register early. Registration deadline is 4/25/2008. Fee of $95 is non-refundable.

Animals of Kentucky Woodlands - Live Animal Show

The Kentucky Environmental Education Company will be presenting a Live Animal Show. Presentation by professional naturalist, Tammy Elza, will focus on various live animals native to Kentucky….Nocturnal Animals, Birds of Prey and Reptiles. These fascinating creatures would have been around the same time as the Native Americans who once called this village on the bluff of the Mississippi river, home. Package price: $5 for adults, $4 for kids age 6-11, free to kids 5 and under and gives access to both the event and the museum.

Family Fun Day

Summer fun Saturday for the whole family to enjoy. Hands-on activities for kids (and adults) of all ages: atlatls and spears, blow guns, pump drills, stone corn grinders, crafts to make and take home, face painting and Native American games. See demonstrations of archaeology, natural environment and Mississippian culture. Complete an archaeology adventure hunt and earn a prize packet. Price: $5 adults; $4 kids age 6-12; free to kids 5 and under. Time: 9am to 4pm.

Researching "Bootheel Man": Lecture and Book Signing by Morley Swingle

Wickliffe Mounds State Historic Site will present a lecture and book-signing by author, Morley Swingle on his new book, Bootheel Man. Swingle will discuss his extensive research for the book concerning federal law, American Indians and archaeologists. Lecture will begin at 10:00 a.m. CST. Copies of the book will be available for sale and can be signed by the author.

Coil Pottery Workshop

Mississippian Native American classic pottery traditions include using the coiling method for construction. Learn the coiling technique by making your own pottery vessels with hands-on instruction by program specialist, Fain Russell. This is an advanced pottery class suitable for adults and older teens. Gourds Galore: Gourd Art and Craft

Make your own gourd art in this informal class. Adults and kids can enjoy making a gourd craft using a variety of materials, techniques and ideas. Egg gourds will be the primary gourd type used. Picnic area available for lunch on your own. Class size is limited so register early. Registration deadline is 8/22/2008. Fee of $10 for adults and $9 for children is non-refundable. Storytelling Myths and Tales at Wickliffe Mounds

On Saturday September 6, Wickliffe Mounds will present a storytelling session with local author, Geraldine Marshall Gutfreund. In conjunction with the Wickliffe Harvest Festival, the one-hour storytelling event will begin at 11:00 a.m. and another one at 1:00 p.m. While listening to the tales and myths of popular Native American stories, visitors can enjoy a slice of watermelon and afterwards tour the museum. Meanwhile, at the Wickliffe Harvest Festival, Fain Russell, noted ceramic expert, will be demonstrating prehistoric pottery for Wickliffe Mounds. Opportunities for service credit - help us preserve this site for future generations by cleaning museum exhibits, clearing the trail and sidewalks or picking up litter. The King Years: Commemorating the Development of Wickliffe Mounds

October marks the anniversary of the development of the Wickliffe Mounds museum by Colonel Fain King in 1932. In commemoration of this endeavor, Wickliffe Mounds State Historic Site will have a pictorial exhibit of the site as it looked in the 1930's, and on Wednesdays, all visitors will receive the group rate admission to the museum. Military and Cherokee Removal Lecture at Wickliffe Mounds

Kentucky Chapter National Trail of Tears Association Meeting at Wickliffe Mounds. An open meeting will begin at 1:00 with a presentation by chapter president, Beverly Baker, on the Military and Cherokee Removal. The program will discuss the military’s involvement (or lack thereof) from the Cherokee roundup in the southeast to their arrival in Indian Territory (Oklahoma) in 1839. Wickliffe Mounds Early Years: Setting the Record Straight

Fain W. King Annual Lecture at Wickliffe Mounds. Frank M. Bodkin, archaeologist and former manager of the Ancient Buried City in the 1970s, will be our guest speaker. His topic is Wickliffe Mounds Early Years: Setting the Record Straight. The program begins at 1:00 and Mr. Bodkin will present an historical overview of the excavations and research at Wickliffe Mounds in the 1930s using rarely seen photos and other resource documents. His research sheds new light on the controversy between William S. Webb (noted University of Kentucky archaeologist) and Fain King over the McLeod Bluff site in Hickman County. Some of the outlandish claims by the news media of that era will also be debunked. In addition, visitors will be able to take an historic walking tour with Mr. Bodkin as he recalls many of the features and buildings from the Ancient Buried City (now Wickliffe Mounds State Historic Site). Native American Education Day

In celebration of November as Native American Heritage Month, Wickliffe Mounds will present special demonstrations and museum exhibits of Native American Mississippian culture.
