The colorful story of coal in Kentucky is filled with triumph and tragedy. Now, you can explore and examine the very locales that made the news back “when coal was king.” Join us for an adventure tour you’ll never forget!
Kentucky Coal Mining Museum
Our stop at the Kentucky Coal Mining Museum will feature an array of exhibits on the coal company towns of Benham and Lynch.
Portal 31 Exhibition Mine
We’ll venture into the Portal 31 Underground Mine where visitors are afforded the unique experience of touring the actual mine by rail car. The site also features a 1920’s lamphouse, bathhouse, and associated L&N train depot.
Black Mountain Summit
Ascend Black Mountain and stand on the highest natural point in Kentucky, with a summit elevation of 4,139 feet.
Kingdom Come State Park
Awe-inspiring overlooks with panoramic views of coal country provide visitors with a vast sense of the area’s grandeur.
To Register:
Advanced registration is required; departure time from the park is 7:45 am and the tour is limited to 10 persons. The registration fee is $30 for adults and $15 for children aged 12 & under. Van transportation is provided. Bring a light jacket for the underground tour. Lunch at Charlotte’s Hoagie Shop is an additional out-of-pocket expense. Total field trip time is 8 hours. Lodging may be available for registered participants at a reduced rate. Register by contacting the park at (800) 325-1712.
